Why Signal?
Signal is a messaging and calling mobile and desktop app already used by hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Its biggest competitors are WhatsApp and Telegram, though both of them are highly unsustainable in my opinion. Signal is my sole option for private communication since early 2021 and one of my favorite apps. The reasons why I chose it were exposed in detail in this article, and the key points that make Signal stand out are:
Owned by an independent nonprofit.
Its code is publicly available (a.k.a. open-source).
State of art end-to-end encryption in everything.
Highly-focused on privacy and sustainability.
Led by renowned tech experts who have spoken out against Big Tech.
Simple and beautiful design.
How to install it?
You first need to install Signal on a mobile device with a valid SIM card. The associated phone number will be required when you open the app and register your Signal account. For troubleshooting there is a Signal Support page.
Mobile
Go to the App Store (iPhone or iPad) or Google Play (Android phones - e.g. Samsung Galaxy; Android tablets are not supported at the moment).
PC
Visit https://signal.org/download and click on the button/link on the right-hand-side corresponding to the operating system of your computer. The executable (.exe)/installation file is downloaded and then you just have to run it. For the synchronization between your mobile and desktop Signal apps, please check the video above.
Group call requirements
Maximum 40 people.
Record your class
Windows (using the Xbox game bar)
Only records one application window at a time and won’t let you record your Desktop, File Explorer, and a few native apps.
